A2ID 2025: Rethinking Human-AI Collaboration through Symbiosis

Today we held the 1st International Workshop on Augmented Artificial Intelligence: a Symbiotic Approach to Enhance Decision-Making (A2ID 2025), co-located with the International Symposium on End-User Development (IS-EUD 2025) — and we couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.

This inaugural edition of A2ID brought together a vibrant group of researchers and practitioners from a range of disciplines, all united by a shared goal: to explore how AI systems can be designed not to replace humans, but to meaningfully augment human decision-making through truly symbiotic approaches.

Pictures taken during the workshop.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in lively discussions around key challenges in designing Augmented AI, including the need for transparency, adaptability, and mutual understanding between humans and machines. We also discussed methodological frameworks, design principles, and real-world applications in domains such as health, defense, and creativity.

We were happy to feature presentations by:

  • Francesca Mantini
  • Vita Barletta
  • Paloma Diaz

Their talks helped spark important conversations and set the tone for an open, thoughtful exchange across the community.

The workshop also featured interactive discussion sessions, where participants explored what it really means to build AI systems that support rather than supplant human agency. The diversity of perspectives — from HCI to cognitive science to machine learning — made for a rich and constructive atmosphere.

We are especially grateful to the organizing team for making A2ID 2025 possible:

  • Miriana Calvano
  • Antonio Curci
  • Paloma Diaz
  • Andrea Esposito
  • Alexander Repenning

This workshop was supported by the Future AI Research project, Spoke 6, WP 6.1, hosted at DIB - Dipartimento di Informatica - Università degli Studi di Bari “Aldo Moro.”

We’re excited about the conversations that began today — and even more excited about where they might lead. Let’s keep working together to build AI that’s not just intelligent, but meaningfully symbiotic.
